Life in the old dog yet

The word retirement derives from the mid-16th century French word retirer. It means ‘to withdraw to a place of safety or seclusion’. I have now been ‘retired’ for three years, and I resent the implication that I have withdrawn from life. Is it just me, or do others feel the need to justify how they spend their time after giving up full time work?
